This is a non-comprehensive list of poets, singers, and other resources concerning logger/occupational folk poetry in the Pacific Northwest. An important note: much of what we consider “logger poetry” was written by working men for their personal enjoyment and for their immediate families and close community. Therefore, published examples aren’t as plentiful as anecdotal, word-of-mouth examples. A few authors who also worked as loggers have published work, but a lot of it is written by folks who didn’t create to establish themselves as career artists or writers, and their work didn’t make it much further than their own communities. Most input from folks familiar with logger poetry was about their own fathers and grandfathers. My purpose for this list is to shed some light on a relatively hidden bit of cultural history in my home that I love. I wanted to learn more about logger poets because as a folk artist I think it is important to be familiar with other art forms local to me. I have dug in and found some interesting examples and have tried to focus on folks with publically available work, but encourage anyone looking for examples in various niches to do some of their own digging and uncover rich local histories in their own areas. I am interested in logger poets specifically in Washington State, but have included areas of overlap insofar as they cover either logging or related topics in the PNW region. This list is by no means comprehensive and is intended to help others curious about this topic to find a starting point for their own rabbit holes. Thank you to all who have provided me with input and examples! I’ll add to the list as I find more helpful sources. If you have sources you’d like me to look at for the list, please dm me on Instagram (@abipriee) or email me (helloabiprie@gmail.com).
